Delaware may be one of the smallest states in the country but it is one of the most densely populated - nearly one million residents live within the 2,490 square miles that make up Delaware. The majority of the population is employed in the capital city of Dover and the neighboring major cities of Philadelphia and Baltimore, both of which are within commuting distance of some parts of Delaware.


Truck drivers who work within the state of Delaware will most likely travel throughout the state and perhaps the entire Mid-Atlantic region transporting goods. Major Delaware Cities

  • Wilmington - The largest city in the state, Wilmington has nearly 73,000 residents and is one of the major cities located in the Delaware Valley metropolitan area. Since it is also within commuting distance of both Philadelphia and Baltimore, many Wilmington residents work in one of those two major cities.


  • Dover - Dover is the capital city of Delaware and the second largest city in the state with a population of roughly 35,000. It is situated near the St. Jones River and is home to both Delaware State University and Wesley College.


  • Newark - With just under 30,000 residents, the city of Newark (not to be confused with Newark, New Jersey) is located on the very northwest border of the state. It is also the location of the popular University of Delaware.


Delaware Roadways

The Delaware Department of Transportation (known as DelDOT for short) manages all the major public roadways in the state - nearly 90%, which is much higher than most states. The largest roadway in Delaware is Interstate 95 which runs along the entire east coast and carries the most traffic in Delaware. In addition there are six U.S. highways and numerous state highways that all service Delaware motorists.
